Artists have favorite artists. They have mentors and artistic influences. Sometimes, as viewers we notice evidence of these factors on a canvas. Referential is an exhibition built from paintings in the Mulvane Art Museum’s permanent collection that showcase this phenomena. The works are produced by artists who are artistically linked by style, culture and time to artists that came before them. The artists do not tell us this with words, but show us with the stroke of a brush, a color combination or an arrangement of similar subject matter. Albert Bloch looked to the great Giotto for inspiration. Jim Hunt chose Rouault. George Soppelsa looked to De Chirico. This exhibition of art is about these visual connections and how they occurred.
