There Is a Woman in Every Color: Black Women in Art

This panel discussion will focus on the ways that Black women artists assert their creative agency. The participating artists, including Ramona Davis, Aisha Imani Sanaa, and Vivian Wilson Bluett, represent a range of voices, methods, and materials. Their work is a testament to the fact that art made by Black women should not be viewed as a monolith.

Join us during First Friday Artwalk for festivities centered on There Is a Woman in Every Color. This reception will celebrate the exhibition's concurrence with both the museum's upcoming centennial and the 70th anniversary of the Brown v. Board of Education decision.

This casual event hosted by the Mulvane Student Advisary Board is especially for Washburn University students. Come enjoy art, food, and good company! 

This panel discussion will address Black women’s historic cultural representation as well as their lived experiences. Panelists will consider the systemic barriers that have led to the underrepresentation of Black women in American culture, the challenges that remain today for them, and ways that our community can build toward a more diverse, inclusive future.

Join the ArtLab in the Mulvane Art Museum Courtyard for an afternoon of fun! Get creative with various art activities, including making sunflower prints inspired by a work in There Is a Woman in Every Color. Go on a journey with professional storyteller Priscilla Howe, and discover the magic of Drum Safari in an interactive musical adventure.

Elizabeth S. Humphrey, curator of There Is a Woman in Every Color, will guide attendees through the gallery and engage them in a conversation about the exhibition's works and themes. A reception will follow.

Tilford Conference Gallery Talk
October 5, 11:30 am - 12:30 pm

Elizabeth S. Humphrey, curator of There Is a Woman in Every Color, will provide conference attendees with a gallery tour of the exhibition while discussing the circumstances that gave rise to it and the insights she gained. The director of the Mulvane, Connie Gibbons, will moderate a Q&A session with participants.

Slow Art Experience
October 11, 12:00 - 1:00 pm

Observe and discuss a work in There Is a Woman in Every Color with Academic Curator Sara Stepp. Using the principles of mindfulness and slow looking, attendees will thoroughly contemplate a single work and discuss their insights. Note: Although our Slow Art events normally include the option for attendees to bring and eat lunch, food is not permitted inside this exhibition.
